1. Introduction to Teaching (8/23/2011)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Barbi Honeycutt, Director of Graduate Teaching Programs, NC State
  • Description: The workshop was focused on learning basic skills in lesson planning, course organization, active learning techniques, and assessment strategies related to effective teaching.

2. Making the Most of Your PTP Experience (9/6/2011)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Melissa Bostrom, Director of Graduate & Academic Professional Development, NC State; Dr. Rebeca Rufty, Associate Dean, The Graduate School, NC State
  • Description: The seminar served as an introduction to the PTP program.

3. Finding the Right Institutional Fit for your Faculty Career (9/27/2011)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Melissa Bostrom
  • Description: The seminar introduced fellows to the variety of institutional types in the United States for post-secondary education, and the basic structure of colleges and universities for the purpose of navigating the job interview process.

4. Negotiating The Academic Job Market (10/11/2011)

  • Facilitators: Dr. Melissa Bostrom; Dr. Francie Cuffney, Professor and Head, Department of Biological Sciences, Meredith College; Dr. April Fogleman, Assistant Professor, Nutrition, NCSU; Ms. Lee Ann Spahr, Chair, Mathematics, Durham Technical Community College; Dr. James Wilson, Professor, Edward P. Fitts Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Description: The seminar presented fellows with strategies for succeeding on the academic job market common across institutional types, and familiarized fellows with the distinctive qualifications that different institutional types may seek in faculty candidates.

5. Classroom Assessment Techniques (10/24/2011 – 10/27/2011)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Barbi Honeycutt
  • Description: The purpose of this online workshop was to discuss, practice, and share a variety of approaches for assessing students’ learning, which are referred to as Classroom Assessment Techniques (CAT’s)

6. Managing the Tenure Process (10/25/2011)

  • Facilitators: Dr. Corey Graves, Associate Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering, North Carolina A&T State University; Dr. Jennifer Hontz, Professor, Mathematics, Meredith College; Dr. Rebeca Rufty, Senior Associate Dean, The Graduate School, NCSU
  • Description: The seminar familiarized fellows with commonalities in the tenure and promotion process across different institutional types, and introduce fellows to the differences between institutions in considering candidates for tenure and
    promotion.

7. Incorporating Instructional Technology (11/8/2011)

  • Facilitators: Dr. Donna Petherbridge, Associate Vice Provost for Instructional Support Services, DELTA; Dr. Anna Howard, Teaching Assistant Professor, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; Dr. Kay Sandberg, Associate Teaching Professor, Chemistry; Dr. Clyde Sorenson, Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor, Entomology
  • Description: The seminar introduced fellows to the importance of instructional technology in the current educational climate as well as its growing importance in the future, and some technology techniques that may help them increase student
    engagement in their classes.

8. Motivating Students (1/24/2012)

  • Facilitators: Dr. Melissa Bostrom; Dr. Bryce Lane, Horticultural Sciences, NCSU
  • Description: The seminar provided fellows with strategies for motivating student engagement, and demonstrate a philosophy of teaching as put into practice by a master teacher.

9. Writing Learning Outcomes (1/30/2012)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Barbi Honeycutt
  • Description: This workshop is designed to introduce participants to the process of writing effective learning outcomes,discuss the importance of learning outcomes in the classroom, and learn how to design successful learning outcomes.

10. Creating Tests that Assess Higher Order Thinking Skills (2/8/2012 – 2/12/2012)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Barbi Honeycutt
  • Description: The workshop covered Bloom’s Taxonomy and writing test questions that will assess more than knowledge and comprehension. Different types of questions were covered and advantages and disadvantages of each type of question were presented.

11. Creating Effective Writing Assignments (2/21/2012)

  • Facilitator: Dr. Chris Anson, University Distinguished Professor and Director, Campus Writing and Speaking Program
  • Description: The workshop introduced fellows to the best practices for developing engaging, goal‐based writing assignments and demonstrated examples of appropriate instructor feedback in supporting students in writing
    assignments.
